Prof. Byeong-Soo Bae
Byeong-Soo Bae is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). He received his B. Eng. of Inorganic Materials Engineering from Seoul National University (Seoul, Korea), M.S. of Materials Engineering from Drexel University (Pennsylvania, USA), and Ph.D. of Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Arizona (Tucson, USA) in1986, 1988, and 1993, respectively.
Since he became a Professor at the KAIST in 1994, he has been mainly working on development of siloxane hybrid materials (Hybrimers) for application of optics and displays. He is a leading researcher on sol-gel process and materials in Korea. He was in the Australian Photonics CRC (Canberra, Australia) during 1999-2000 and in Flexible Display Center (FDC) at Arizona State University (Phoenix, USA) during 2006-2007.
Also, he had been a Director of the Sol-Gel innovation Project (SOLIP) that was being supported for 10 years (2002-2012) by Ministry of Industry and Energy (MIE) since 2002. He worked as a Director of Chemical Sciences in National Research Foundation (NRF) of Korea in 2008-2009. He directed KAIST Institute of NanoCentry in 2011-2012. He served as a committee member (첨단융합전문위원) of National Science and Technology Commission (국가과학기술위원회) and National Science Technology Council(국가과학기술심의회) in 2011-2014, Consultation Committee of Basic Research Promotion (기초연구진흥협의회) in 2013-2015. He found a spin-off company, Solip Tech. Co. Ltd. in 2012 to commercialize his R&D achievements of hybrimers and has been a CEO. Currently, he is a Director of Wearable Platform Materials Technology Center that is an Engineering Research Center (ERC) supported by National Research Foundation (NRF) of Korea and a Board Member of NRF of Korea.
He received Australian IREX Fellowship, Korea Technology Grand Award (대한민국기술대상), 연암해외연구교수, KAIST Academic Award, Information Display Award. 국가연구개발 최우수 연구성과, 한국을 빛낸 과학기술 및 산업성과, EEWS 사업기획경진대회 최우수상. In 2012, he received the Woongbi Order of Science and Technology Merit (과학기술훈장 웅비장).
